Another Mac Post
I'd put this all behind a cut, but cuts don't appear to be working for me...
Anyway.
I have at this point tried, I think, just about every RSS reader that supports Growl. I really like Growl. I like my Growl notifications. I want my RSS to use it. But it's proving difficult. Anyway, this is what I've seen so far.
NewsFan: NewsFan is in many ways a great little app. But it doesn't handle atom feeds terribly gracefully. That's not a huge problem. What is a pretty big problem is that it has a lot of issues displaying articles--whole sections get chopped up when you go for the expanded view. Also, it's Growl support is just crap.
Shrook: Shrook would be my top choice reader save a few problems. It costs $25, for one, and when there are free options out there I have trouble paying for things. Secondly, it's got a lousy method of inapp article browsing--you have to enable display all webpages, at which point the handy little summary/preview disappears. I use those previews to figure out whether I even want to bother loading a page. Apparently you can toggle back and forth by using Command+Option+O but who the hell wants to toggle every time? The logical thing would be to have clicking the in-preview link launch the expanded web browser, but that doesn't happen.
PulpFiction: Reasonably good, but again with the costly, and again with the not great. Also, I find their whole "fruit" theme incredibly irritating.
I'd list the others here, but if you're one of the people actually reading the mac posts I have then you already have seen my takes on the others in previous posts.
I should probably start putting tags up on these things. Just in case. Do any of you out there actually filter by tag?
